The White Wind Zen Community:
An international community practising and teaching Dogen’s Zen since 1985.

Then Old Stonehead goes on:

In all things, the leaves spread out from the root.
High and low return to the source and become only words.

So, shikamo is "form" or "thing". Ichi ichi means "one one", or "each", no is "of", hō is "dharma". He means that each and every thing arises together with everything else as interactions emerging from interactions: naturally, spontaneously, without direction or intention, but as the play of possibilities. Up and down, front and back, left and right, in and out – all arise in the same place. All places arise in that place. Rooted in this we stand up and step forward.

-Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi, continuing teisho 3: "Waking Up is Not a Matter of 'Up'", Saturday, August 24th, 1996 in the teisho series "Studying the Mystery", Commentaries on Shitou Xiqian's "Sandokai".

Listening to Teisho

Associate and general students should continue to follow the recorded Teachings schedule for the sitting you were attending at the monastery, and listen to that during your home practice.

You can access the online Recorded Teachings Library at wwzc.org/recorded-teachings-schedule.

You can also use the streaming site at app.wwzc.org to live stream recordings from the online Library. If you have forgotten your password or need assistance with accessing the recorded Teachings, please email schedule@wwzc.org.

Please note that teisho should be listened to in the correct order and with none missed out as themes, metaphors, questions raised and answered evolve in spirals throughout the series.

Translations

Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi has recently completed translation work on some shorter texts by Eihei Dogen zenji from the Shobogenzo. The work on these particular texts is based upon the literal translations that he worked on with Joshu Dainen roshi at Hakukaze-ji around 1977-78 followed by many years of putting them down, picking them up, and polishing. Naturally, more essential texts such as Uji, Genjokoan, Shinjin Gakudo and some 40 others were completed first and have been given extensive commentaries by the Roshi. This batch of texts includes Baike: Plum Blossoms, Ryugin: Howling Dragon, and Udonge: The Udumbara Blossoming and many others are nearing completion. Many of these will be posted on our website over the next few months.

Spicy Tofu

Spicy Tofu

Based on a recipe by Maangchi https://www.maangchi.com/

Ingredients
One package medium-firm tofu (I used “Sunrise” brand) cut into ¼ inch slices.
1 tablespoon sesame oil
3 finely chopped green onions
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 teaspoon Korean hot pepper flakes (gochugaru)
2 teaspoons shoyu (soy sauce)
½ teaspoon lime juice
½ teaspoon brown sugar
Roasted sesame seeds

Method for the Tofu:
Heat a non-stick frying pan to medium-high and add the sesame oil
Place the slices of tofu in the pan and slide them around in the oil to distribute it.
Let them sit for about five minutes without turning them, until the bottom is browned.
Turn them over and give them five minutes to brown.
Turn them onto a serving platter.

Method for the sauce:
This is a sauce that does not require cooking.
In a bowl, combine the finely chopped green onions with the minced garlic, the Korean hot pepper flakes, shoyu, lime juice, brown sugar and sesame seeds. Stir together. Pour over the tofu and then drizzle a half teaspoon of sesame oil to finish.

Can be served hot or cold. Serve with noodles or rice and a pickle such as kimchi.
